writer’s garret, los angeles CA
Our elm street client is a poet and writer — with a very busy home life — who needs a private space in which to work: to write, to translate, to compose and to process.
The elm street writer’s garret is an expandable 200-to-500 square foot rear-yard structure that is part-office and part-retreat for the client. It was designed through a series of on-site writing/drawing exercises between the client herself and the WGA design team. The intention of these exercises was to understand both the writer’s process (so we can accommodate her working needs in the space), and as a test and challenge to the typical techniques the architect utilizes in her own processes.
Over the 2019 summer and 2020 spring we will also be conducting a series of design-by-writing workshops at our Mojave Desert location, as we further test the design process through large-scale drawings. (Development of the process drawings are shown above).
