The client needs more space for living and storage in their existing home, and the Los Angeles City Ordinance for these dwelling units — newly updated in 2020 — allows them to demolish their existing garage to build this additional living space, without adding additional parking spaces.  

Inside the ADU, a stair to the mezzanine/loft level offers the client dual efficiencies as it also acts as a floor-to-ceiling bookshelf.
